An energy first for Wales

In a significant milestone for clean energy, the country’s first tidal generator was installed this week in Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire.

The DeltaStream device that was developed by Cardiff-based, Tidal Energy Limited, is the first of its kind to be installed in Wales. It is connected to the National Grid and through to devices worldwide, generating clean, green energy by harnessing the power of the tides. The company that developed the device are now frontrunners in this new technology and industry.

The device weighs over 200 tonnes and has a unique gravity-based foundation which allows it to lie on the seabed under its own weight, without the need for drilling. It will provide enough power for nearly 10,000 homes and contributing to the Welsh Government’s renewable energy targets.

Over £15 million has been invested into the project through the Welsh Government, EU funding, and the various companies involved. Alec Don, the Chief Executive of The Port of Milford Haven said, “we are incredibly excited for Tidal Energy Ltd on this momentous achievement”.

This really is huge milestone for the company, the development of tidal energy, and Wales.
